As a recipient of an endowed scholarship and a departmental scholarship, Will Jost ’25 is grateful for the opportunity to attend Carthage, where he is a major in geographical information science (GIS) and double minor in data science and political science. Through the support of The Aspire Center, Will received invaluable assistance in searching for internships, building his resume, and honing his interview skills. This guidance led him to secure an internship with the City of Round Rock in Texas, where he contributed to maintaining their GIS systems, updating data layers, and ensuring the accuracy of GIS information. “It was a great experience,” he says. “I learned a ton, and I have to thank my time here at Carthage for preparing me for it.”

Will not only appreciates the academic and career support at Carthage, but he also enjoys discovering the local community, especially when his family visits. “Our favorite spot is the Coffee Pot in downtown Kenosha,” he shares. “We always make a point to stop by whenever my family comes to town.”

“I chose Carthage because of its dedicated GIS program. I really liked the faculty and fell in love with the campus on the lake when visiting.”

Faculty mentors

Carthage faculty have had an impact by helping me build skills in and outside of my field. They provided a model that has helped me determine that GIS is what I want to do and gave me the tools to succeed.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class was Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones) in Geosciences. It helped introduce me to flying and using drones for study. The course encouraged me to get my remote pilot license with the Federal Aviation Administration.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class at Carthage so far has been Senior Seminar in Geospatial Science. It has been a fun challenge to come up with and work on a large project. I like having a chance to come up with a topic for a project that I enjoy, and it makes putting the work into it worth it.”

Campus involvement

“I am a member of the Carthage Honors Program, as well as the Carthage Geography Club. I played varsity lacrosse for two years and am helping assist and film for the team my senior year.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is between studying in Hedberg Library or sitting in the chairs along the lake and listening to the waves when the weather is good.”

Favorite memory

“Some of my favorite Carthage memories include getting to travel and play with the lacrosse team. I really enjoyed the Carthage Honors Program experiences, including one where we got to visit the Chicago Magic Lounge and learn about one show there. Overall, there’s been a ton of events on the campus that groups run, and they are all really fun.”

Best study tip

“Don’t wait until the last minute to study. Always try to get your studying done early, and don’t procrastinate. It makes it a lot less stressful when you can get things done and not have them weighing on you. I have found that the library is a great place to go and get things done without as many distractions.”

Best tip for making friends

“Go to some events, and just find people who may have something in common with you. Whether it’s someone in your team, in your classes, or even just someone in your orientation group, there are many opportunities to find and meet people.”

Biggest surprise

“I think the biggest surprise for me was the weather. Coming from Texas, I didn’t know at all what to expect and had no clue how to prepare. Now, it seems like no big deal, and I have adapted much better.”
